McNeilus Expands Side Loader Manufacturing Capabilities to Meet Growing Demand for Industry-Leading Refuse Vehicles
Dodge Center facility transformation promotes production efficiency, quality and worker safety.
Dodge Center, MN (May 14, 2025) – McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) business, today announced the expansion of its industry-leading side loader refuse and recycling collection vehicle production line. The expansion is supported by a significant modernization of the company’s manufacturing operations at its Dodge Center, Minnesota headquarters, marking a major step forward in product innovation, operational efficiency and customer-focused growth.
The transformed side loader manufacturing line is the second high flow manufacturing line at McNeilus, following the successful launch of a high flow rear loader line in 2023. This investment incorporates advanced Industry 4.0 manufacturing technologies which promote quality, safety and throughput while reinforcing McNeilus’ commitment to delivering high-performance solutions for waste collection professionals.
"Our side loader line has seen tremendous demand, and with this expansion, we’ve added the capacity to meet that demand while working to create a safe and efficient manufacturing environment," said Lee Dreas, vice president and general manager of McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing. "By introducing smart technology and reimagining our processes, we’ve built a foundation that supports the success of our team members and the customers we serve. It’s a win-win and delivers quality products at the scale the industry needs."
The Dodge Center facility has been fully repurposed to support this next-generation production environment. The transformation included stripping the plant down to bare concrete, repainting inside and out, installing robotic paint systems and integrating McNeilus’ advanced Manufacturing Execution System (MES). The MES digitally captures and tracks every build stage, providing end-to-end traceability and enabling consistent, repeatable quality.
Connected torque monitoring tools and digital work instructions streamline technician workflows and support a safe, predictable production line to produce trucks with exceptional quality. The redesign simplifies assembly around the truck and mirrors the sophistication of leading automotive plants, elevating McNeilus’ manufacturing capability and reinforcing its position as an employer of choice in the region.
The expansion aligns closely with McNeilus’ commitment to the waste collection industry. As communities and private haulers demand greater flexibility and performance, the McNeilus team continues to focus on delivering a full suite of side loader offerings—each designed for strength, innovation and adaptability:
- Zero Radius™ Automated Side Loader: Featuring a unique reach-style arm that eliminates swing-out clearance, the ZR handles tight urban routes efficiently and is equipped with the McNeilus CODE™ control system for advanced diagnostics and performance insights.
- AutoReach® Automated Side Loader: One of the industry’s strongest arms, AutoReach offers up to 2,000 pounds of lift capacity and an 8-foot side-to-side arc that navigates obstructions with precision.
- Manual/Automated Side Loader: One of the most versatile solutions on the market, this hybrid unit offers both automated arm control and manual throw-in capability—ideal for unpredictable residential routes.
All McNeilus side loaders feature exclusive Excalibre™ packing cylinders designed to resist wear and contamination, an advanced paint process for durability, and multiple customization options to match customer needs.
"This expansion represents the next step in our evolution," added Dreas. "We’ll continue to introduce industry-leading technology to support our customers, our team and our mission to drive and shape the future of refuse and recycling collection."
