The WasteExpo conference recently unveiled a host of innovative advancements in the refuse management industry, highlighting how new technologies are driving improvements in efficiency, safety and sustainability.

From the latest in electric refuse and recycling vehicles to sophisticated fleet management systems, this year's event showcased significant strides in technology that cater not only to the operational needs of businesses but also prioritize environmental stewardship and enhanced driver support.

Wasteexpo key takeaways

The recent WasteExpo conference provided valuable insights and introduced the latest innovations in the refuse and recycling management industry. Here are the key takeaways from the event:

Driver-first design

A significant focus of WasteExpo was on improving driver support through ergonomic design and advanced driver-assistance systems, including features designed to:

  • Promote driver comfort
  • Improve ease of use and responsiveness of truck controls
  • Enhance visibility

These improvements are crucial to help address driver fatigue and promote overall safety and efficiency on routes.

Enhancing Total Cost of Ownership and Business Goals

Another prominent theme at WasteExpo were strategies to enhance total cost of ownership (TCO)—investing in high-quality, durable vehicles offering long-term value through low maintenance costs and high efficiency.

Additionally, there were several industry leaders showcasing smart technologies, like autonomous solutions and electric power, to help refuse and recycling management companies achieve broader business goals and highlight opportunities to promote productivity and environmental compliance.

Supporting Sustainability

Electric refuse and recycling collection vehicles were a highlight of the expo, underscoring the industry's focus on sustainable solutions. These vehicles promise not only to help manage emissions but also to promote noise control, managing urban operations and enhancing community comfort. Booth displays included educational insights on advancements in battery technology, charging infrastructure and the economic aspects of transitioning to electric fleets.

Connected Products

The integration of connected products through IoT technology is transforming the refuse and recycling management industry.

Data-driven solutions, such as fleet management software and real-time tracking systems, were showcased to optimize operations by providing detailed insights into vehicle performance, route efficiency and system diagnostics.

Prompt Access to Parts and Service Support

Ensuring quick access to parts and reliable service support was another critical discussion point. Vendors at the expo showcased streamlined supply chains and enhanced customer service platforms designed to minimize downtime. The importance of having robust service networks and the role of digital tools in facilitating fast response times and preventive maintenance schedules were key themes.

These takeaways from the WasteExpo demonstrate a strong industry commitment to innovation, sustainability and efficiency, pointing towards a future where refuse and recycling collection is not only very effective but also environmentally focused and aligned with the evolving needs of cities and businesses alike.

Featured Refuse and Recycling Trucks and Technology

McNeilus’ booth was a hub of innovation, featuring several vehicles and technology solutions for visitors to look at, touch and experience. Additionally, several McNeilus vehicles were on display in partner booths, as well as outdoor display areas. Here are some of the highlights.

McNeilus® Volterra™ ZFL™

The McNeilus® Volterra ZFL™ is a fully integrated, electric refuse and recycling collection vehicle for commercial collection. This purpose-built vocational vehicle is designed for predictable routes, consistent duty-cycles and a designated home base that can support a fixed charging infrastructure. Unveiled at CES 2025, the McNeilus® Volterra ZFL is North America’s first fully electric front loading refuse and recycling collection vehicle.

Key features of the Volterra ZFL eRCV include a consistent 15” step height, tight turning radius, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and temperature-controlled seating. The McNeilus® Volterra™ family of vehicles prioritizes ergonomics and comfort, ease of training and operating, as well as productivity to help promote operator retention and attract new talent. By combining sustainable technology with an operator-focused design, the Volterra ZFL™ electric vehicle promotes efficiency, environmental focus and operator satisfaction.

The truck boasts a state-of-the-art battery system, providing a reliable and efficient power source, so the vehicle can complete a full day’s work on a single charge, depending on the route and usage patterns. Additionally, maintenance is optimized with the electric drivetrain, which has fewer moving parts than traditional engines, reducing the number of parts that can have mechanical failures and promoting maintenance efficiency.

McNeilus® Zero Radius™ Automated Side Loader Enabled with CartSeeker™ Curbside Automation

The Zero Radius™ Automated Side Loader is designed for residential refuse and recycling collection, delivering zero radius operation to navigate narrow streets, tight alleyways and low-clearance obstacles with ease. With the grabber inline with the arm, it effectively navigates cul-de-sacs and obstructions such as parked cars, for seamless and effective collection.

Integrated with an AI-enabled cart detection system and Lidar distance verification sensors, CartSeeker™ technology acts as an additional layer of intelligence by identifying waste carts, aligning the lift arm and executing the dump cycle—streamlining operations and providing for efficient routes.

Advanced AI recognition and autonomous alignment provide operator assurance, helping address time and address driver fatigue by minimizing the need to exit the vehicle, ultimately providing a great experience for the operator.

CartSeeker™ with Electric ZR Arm Demonstrator

The CartSeeker™ technology was further displayed in the booth with a live demonstration. This innovative system uses vision-based technology to automatically differentiate between refuse and recycling carts and position the truck’s lift arm precisely, eliminating the need for manual adjustment and helping drive a short overall cycle time. The demonstrator in the booth featured the McNeilus® ZeroRadius™ Electric Arm which utilizes AI and electrification to promote precise, efficient bin detection.

Autonomous Refuse Robot Demonstrator

Within the event booth, attendees experienced a live demo of the Hail-able Autonomous Refuse Robot – Electric (HARR-E) demonstrator, showcasing its autonomous capabilities and user-friendly interface. Tailored for master-planned communities, condominium and apartment complexes, large commercial buildings and other unique applications, the HARR-E™ technology redefines refuse management with on-demand waste removal.

How It Works

Users simply hail the robot via its native app or a smart home assistant. The HARR-E robot leaves its charging base to collect waste from the specified pickup location, where it opens its lid and closes with the push of a button once the refuse is deposited. After collection, the HARR-E robot navigates to a central dumping site, before returning to a charging base in preparation for its next pickup. This technology also promotes community comfort through quiet operation.

This innovative solution streamlines refuse management, enhancing efficiency and logistics to complement traditional services and redefines day-to-day refuse collection for modern communities.

The takeaways from WasteExpo are clear: the refuse and recycling management industry is embracing a future where innovation intersects with practicality and environmental awareness.
